Clinical Services: One of the most important things to remember is that you can improve your life and have increased happiness and well-being. Everyone has difficult times and experiences difficulty in dealing with aspects of life events. In most cases we deal with them very well. This is similar to how we deal with common physical ailments such as a flu, for example. However, sometimes due to circumstances, a sudden accumulation of stressors, or the experience of many events at once may create a sense of not being able to cope. Visiting us and looking at your particular set of circumstances can enable you to work with us to develop a treatment and recovery plan that will give you new insight into yourself and new knowledge and a set of life skills to use in everyday life to cope with such events.
Our Services
We will conduct a thorough assessment of your mental health well-being and this may lead to a diagnosis or it may not. In consultation with you we develop a treatment and recovery plan.
In treatment we use evidenced based therapies to assist you in your recovery. Evidence-based practice in psychology is the integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences. This means that you gain the best possible benefit of a treatment that has proven to work and therefore you have confidence in your treatment goals being achievable. We use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness based CBT as our main focus of treatment as there is significant evidence relating to their effectiveness. We also draw on other modalities to suit your individual and culturally specific needs.
What is Psychotherapy?:
Psychotherapy is an umbrella term used to describe a range of “talking” therapies. used by mental health clinicians in treating psychological distress and mental illness. These include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness based CBT, Systemic Therapy, Crisis Intervention, Suicide Prevention, Narrative Therapy, Psychodynamic, Couples Therapy. We use relaxation and psycho-education as well as other treatment modalities depending on the individual need. We also have other clinicians with expertise in other areas such as Family Therapy that may be accessed to suit your individual needs.
Structure of the sessions
Each session lasts approximately 50 minutes. When you get your referral from your GP and contact us to make the first appointment we will direct you to this website so that you can read this information. We will also give you a password code to log in and print out some forms so you can read them and bring them to your first appointment. This will save you some time and allow you to read and reflect on the information in your own relaxed environment.
Your first session has the goal of finding out why you think you have come to see us. Our goal is to fully understand your situation. During our first few sessions, We will undertake a comprehensive assessment of factors that may be impacting your presentation, feelings, ways of thinking and behaviour. This assessment process will also seek to identify your personal goals. It is always worthwhile to start early in thinking about your goals i.e. what do you want to achieve by seeing a Clinical Psychologist?
As mentioned above your therapy sessions are one hour. To maximize the benefit from each session our therapists expect a commitment (self-commitment) from you to practice what you have learnt in each session at home in a semi structured way which will be guided by the therapists instruction. Evidence shows that people who engage in therapy and are committed to completing their practice exercises between sessions achieve better outcomes from the therapy and experience greater recovery.
A typical session commences with checking how you have been since the last session.
The therapist then checks how you went with the practice exercises that were agreed upon in the last session.
We then set the agenda for each session and if you have any thing you wish to discuss or work on we will place this on the agenda for the session. The main part of each session lasts for about approximately 40 mins where what has been placed on the agenda is addressed. In the last ten minutes the therapist will summarise what we have covered in the session, we set practice exercises, clarify any questions you may have and set the date for your next appointment. At the conclusion of each session you will also be required to make payment for the professional services provided.
